Barranco de Vallmala
The Barranco de Vallmala in Montserrat is a v3 a1 III canyon, largely unequipped, requiring 2x30m ropes for its 15 rappels, the longest being 30m. Access is from the Montserrat Monastery car park, with a 15-minute approach via the Sant Cova stairs to the lower Sant Joan Funicular station. The route is not suitable for beginners due to the condition of the anchors. The first rappel of 16m leads to a ledge, avoiding a stagnant pool. Subsequent rappels include a 22m drop between pools and a 15m vertical rappel into an open area with old pipe remnants. Anchors are often poorly placed, with thin steel cable handlines and a mix of bolts and spits, some requiring reinforcement. The descent includes several downclimbs and short rappels into small, dark pools, with a quick 5-minute return to the car.
