Torrent de Mataplana

Torrent de Mataplana is a vertical, mostly dry canyon with 16 rappels, the longest being 25m. The approach takes 35 minutes, involving a progressive climb up a path and then a steeper ascent to the Grao de l’Òs before reaching the torrent. The descent is about 2.5 hours. The canyon features varied rappels, starting with a 5m drop using a thick fixed rope. Subsequent rappels include a 4m drop from a tree, a 5m rappel into a shallow pool, and a 6m short rappel. There's a 12m rappel down a slippery toboggan, a 20m rappel past three small, slick pools, and a 4m rappel with a questionable anchor. Anchors are a mix of spits, parabolts, and pitons, with some being regular. A shorty wetsuit is recommended as the canyon is typically dry or has minimal water. Two 30m ropes are needed. Escape routes are available. The return walk is a very quick 5 minutes.
