Barranc del Pas de l’Escalell

The Barranc del Pas de l’Escalell, near Castell de l’Areny, is a sustained vertical descent with 18 rappels, the longest being 26m. The approach is very short, just 1 minute from the picnic area parking. Access to the parking can be challenging, requiring a high-clearance vehicle for the best option or navigating steep, gravelly tracks. The descent begins with a 5m rappel from a U-shaped chemical anchor, followed by a 10m or 12m rappel over an embedded block and a slippery log. The canyon features numerous rappels, with anchors consisting of chemical bolts and parabolts. A full wetsuit (long john and jacket) is recommended. There are two escape routes available. The return walk is 25 minutes. This canyon requires two 30m ropes or one 60m rope, plus a 30m rescue rope, and is suitable for those seeking a long, sustained rappelling experience.
